Dear HCCY members, HAY parents, and friends, please see below for important community news and upcoming events:

CUPE Job Action
REMINDER – We have been advised by the York Region District School Board (YRDSB) that as a result of the current Job Action by members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), all community use permits have been cancelled and will remain cancelled during CUPE Job Action.

As a result, the Hellenic Academy of York (HAY) Greek School will be closed on Saturday October 5, 2019. Please do not bring your children to the school this Saturday as the school will be locked. Classes will resume once we have been notified by YRDSB that the school is once again open.

We are committed to providing you with timely information and remain hopeful that a provincial agreement can be reached soon. Updates can be found on the YRDSB school board website at www.yrdsb.ca.

Thanksgiving Holiday – No Classes Saturday, October 12, 2019
Please note there will be No Greek School Classes on Saturday, October 12, 2019 in recognition of the Thanksgiving Holiday. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your extended families.

School Code of Conduct Forms
REMINDER – Teachers distributed school code of conduct and expectation forms that are to be signed by both students and parents, and returned to the school. For anyone that has misplaced their forms you may download a copy here. Please have the forms printed, signed, and submitted back to the teachers ASAP.

Homework Assignments and Class Announcement Blog
Parents and students are reminded to visit our school classroom blogs for homework assignments and special announcements pertaining to each individual class. You may access the homework blogs by the School Page on our website, or by clicking here.

REMINDER – We have many students with a variety of allergies at the school. We ask that everyone please be aware when packing lunches and snacks for your children to ensure they are nut and allergy friendly. A letter from our principal will be going out to all families this week. Thank you for your attention to this very important matter. Click to view Severe Allergy Alert

A Final Note
After over 10 memorable years of service with the Hellenic Canadian Community of York Region and the Hellenic Academy of York, I must announce that I will now need to step away and take some time to focus on other projects. I am very grateful for all the accomplishments I have shared over the years with our HCCY family, fellow board members past and present, teachers, assistants, administrative staff, volunteers, parents, students and supporters. We have come a long way, and I and am proud to have been a part of the HCCY and HAY growth and transformation over this period. Delighted to have witnessed my two children graduate from our Greek School program, all the way from kindergarten through to grade 8, and beyond to the Greek Credit program. A heart felt thank you once again to all.

At this time I would like to pass the torch and introduce our new incoming president, Helen Barbalias. I have had the pleasure to work with Helen in her capacity as a member of the HCCY board of directors where she consistently exhibited professionalism and strong leadership skills. A true volunteer, filled with fresh ideas for our community with the energy and willingness to deliver. I am confident that our current board of directors under the leadership of Helen Barbalias will continue to push the envelope to reach new heights for our community. Please join me in welcoming our new HCCY president, Helen Barbalias.

Regards,
Harris Gratsias
