Head injuries are the number-one cause of serious injury and death to kids on bicycles. A properly fitted and correctly worn bike helmet can cut the risk of serious head injury by up to 85 per cent. As a result, the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA) and it’s partners are proud to dedicate their time and energy to help prevent the devastation caused by cycling accidents and head injuries. The Bike Helmets on Kids campaign has received awards from the Brain Injury Association of Canada (BIAC), the Ontario Brain Injury Association (OBIA), and the Ontario Safety League (OSL) for its contribution to promoting injury prevention awareness and safety education. At this event each student at the Hellenic Academy of York will be fitted properly with a bike helmet and will learn about bike safety and the importance of wearing a helmet.

The last day of Greek school classes for 2018 will be held on Saturday, December 15th. This is also the day of our Annual Hellenic Academy of York Christmas Yiorti, when each class will perform various songs and plays celebrating this very special time of year. The Yiorti is scheduled to start at 10:30am SHARP in the school gymnasium and will end mid-day at which time students will be dismissed for the day. We ask that everyone stay until the end of the program. An assortment of snacks and treats will be available for all to enjoy following the assembly. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.

Our annual end of school year celebration took place on Saturday, June 9, 2018. The program kicked off with the Grade 8 Graduation Ceremony in which we recognized the hard work and efforts of our graduating class and distributed diplomas to graduating students from the Hellenic Academy of York this year. The event followed with song, dance, theatrical, and video performances from each grade level. All performances are available for your viewing pleasure on our website, link provided below. Following the class performances a BBQ picnic party was held behind the school where parents, students, and volunteers celebrated the school year end and the start of the summer break under the sun. Congratulations once again to all students, teachers, and assistants who participated in our Christmas Yiorti on December 16th, 2017. The show was filled with memorable performances and entertaining presentations. We are so proud of all our students, and we thank you for providing your children with the support and encouragement needed as they embrace their Greek language, culture, and heritage at our school. We are particularly grateful for the support provided by the Hellenic Heritage Foundation and Consul General of Greece for their attendance and participation in our Christmas Yiorti this year. The Hellenic Academy of York is especially thankful for the very generous monetary support from the Hellenic Heritage Foundation. These funds will go a long way to support our Greek School by covering the cost of textbooks for the year.

Thank you to all parents, students, and volunteers who participated in The Past is Alive: Legacy of Ancient Greece in Canada Bus Tour. The sold out event was a fantastic learning experience for everyone involved. From the emotional and historical significance of the Pontian sacrifice of 1914-1923, the neoclassical Greek architecture surrounding the city of Toronto, to the homage of the pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus, and the teacher led discussions surrounding the Pillars of Justice in our legal system and communities. Finally, and let’s not forget the delicious gyros meal from Greektown followed by fresh loukoumades for all. If you missed this year’s trip, fear not as this may well become an annual outing judging from the feedback received.

International Children’s Day Multicultural Festival

The Hellenic Canadian Community of Region and students from our Greek school the Hellenic Academy of York will be participating at the International Children’s Day Multicultural Dance & Art Festival on Sunday, April 23rd. We urge all parents and students to attend and take part in the festivities. Children from different cultural backgrounds will come together and celebrate the day with shows, folk dances and share their folk music.
The program will consist of a variety of entertaining shows. Fun-fair activities such as clowns, face painting, popcorn and cotton candy stations, balloon sculpting and multicultural art shows by the communities will also take place where children have the opportunity to interact with each other, enjoy the day and make friends all while being integrated to the highly cultural diversity found in Canada.
Admission is Free for everyone. We look forward to seeing you and your family with us as we come together to celebrate International Children’s Day Multicultural Dance and Art Festival as recognized by UNICEF. Expected participation of over 1000 guests representing the cultural mosaic of the GTA and participation of honourable guests, Members of Parliament, City Councillors, Trustees and Media. Let’s celebrate together and proudly put our Hellenic heritage and culture on display for all to see. Our HAY students will perform a traditional dance, and our volunteers and teachers will exhibit a Hellenic themed arts & crafts activity.

Every year we hold an annual dance-a-thon for the students. The students really enjoy the fun time dancing to popular songs in the gym, while at the same time raising much needed funds for our Greek School. This year, the dance-a-thon takes place on Saturday, May 5 at 11:00 am.

On Friday November 4, 2011 the York Central Hospital Foundation held it’s 24th annual fundraising gala, and the Hellenic-Canadian Community of York Region (HCCY) was proud to be a Bronze Sponsor. The event was titled the Moonlight & Magic Gala and was held at the LeParc Banquet Hall in Markham. All proceeds raised were used to help purchase a state-of-the-art “Smart” Intravenous Pump System for the York Central Hospital. Yet another shining example of the HCCY giving back to our community.

The HCCY proudly presents a Comedy Night with Basile! Basile, the Greek-American comedian returns to the Greater Toronto Area with a performance in York Region. Basile has entertained audiences in English and Greek in shows such as “Growing Up Greek in America”. Tickets are only $35 for HCCY members, $45 for non-members. It is a PG-13 rated show and tickets for children up to 12 years old are only $10. The show takes place at the elegant Paramount Conference and Event Venue on Sunday, May 1, 2011.
